- B"M> >Well, we've gotten two 100% compatible Mac emulators in that time (I

- B"M> serial/parallel
- B"M> >port, sound, high res/high depth gfx etc etc. And costing less than the
- B"M> >Ardi offering too.
-
- B"M> Huh? I never saw emplant offered for less than $49. And you are
-
- Well, I don't see executor offered for $49 either - that's the educational
- discount.
-
- B"M> comparing
- B"M> apples to kiwi fruits. What Ardi does is to completely reimplement the
- B"M> MacOS (sometimes by thunking it to the host OS, but at least with DOS
- B"M> there isn't much you can thunk to), while Emplant simply adds a bit of
- B"M> otherwise missing hardware, and then loads the real MacOS, using the
- B"M> real Mac ROM. Both of which you have to get from somewhere. Using the
- B"M> same type of processor that the OS expects.
-
- To the user, it is totally uninteresting what engineering mountains have
- been moved to bring him the product - what matters is that it works for him,
- and that is something Emplant and ShapeShifter does more and better. That
- the makers of executor has gone out of the way to make it difficult for
- themselves is of no consequence to the user if executor cannot run the
- programs the user wants it to run.
-
- B"M> >Reinventing the wheel on such a humungous scale as the Ardi people
- B"M> >are may be good for avoiding being sued, but the result and development
- B"M> >time sure suffers.
-
- B"M> But it sure is great for performance. Every OS call they implement is
- B"M> native,
- B"M> while every OS call that runs from a copy of MacOS or a Mac ROM will be
- B"M> emulated. About a factor of three in execution speed.
-
- It is? I'm getting 25MHz 68040 performance on a 100MHz Pentium.
-
- That means that while pretending to be a Mac with executor, my Pentium runs
- at about 10% of its normal speed, and that a 68060 based Amiga is faster
- 'playing mac' than ANY Pentium would be running Executor. Despite that
- 68060 being only about half the speed of the fastest P's.
